We think you will want Topology

Most scan tools have a very easy and fast top to bottom list and readout that shows which system is potentially “causing the issue” per your customer’s expert diagnosis skills, but:

• That list is confusing: Showing the average customer this breakdown is a great way to confuse them (unless you are a master at gaining their understanding).

• Seeing Topology in action helps almost anyone see what’s going on in their vehicle at a glance.

Look for FCA AutoAuth support

Unless you focus exclusively on one brand(s) you are bound to have a 2018 or newer Chrysler vehicle roll into your shop at some point, and if you do not have FCA AutoAuth that customer will not be able to get diagnosed.

Service Resets, Relearns, and Calibrations

A few things here:

• Reset Functions: Scan tools have gotten very affordable in the last few years, so buying one that does not have at least 30 or more service reset functions for your shop does not make sense.

• Relearns: Must haves for your next scan tool include Oil Light/Service Interval Reset, Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Release/Reset, Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) Calibration, Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Regeneration, Injector Coding, Throttle Body Relearn, and Battery Management System (BMS) registration after a battery swap and more.

• TPMS Integration: While this is less common (for now) if you can find a scan tool offering Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensor read, activation, and relearn functions this expands your shop offerings and keeps you from needing to buy a separate TPMS tool for this work as it comes your way.

Charging Cradles seems silly…

Until you have to plug in the scan tool 2-3 times a day and it starts costing you time and delays in diagnosis work. We will call the charging cradle an underrated feature among professional scan tools, and while we are on this subject make sure you check that battery size in your potential new scan tool as anything under 6,000 mAh is simply not enough to get through the day (especially when the guys in the shop forget to plug it in during lunch).

Stop cheaping out on such a vital repair tool

Yes the scan tool is a larger capital expenditure, but getting one with more speed, data integrity, and ability to keep pace with automotive technology as newer, faster and more complicated software is produced by the OEM’s will save you time, frustration and in fact start making you a bit more money as that “great deal” scan tool you got starts getting slower…and slower (and yes slower) as the second and third year of use and firmware updates start filling up its smaller capacity memory and processing power.

Most modern day pro scan tools are effectively Android based tablets, and these can drastically vary from scan tool builder to builder. If you are looking at tech specs (which you should be) make sure these are the minimum specs for any possible unit you may purchase:

• Android 10 or preferably 11

• 4GB of RAM and preferably 8GB of RAM

• AT LEAST 64GB of hard drive space

• Processors can get quite technical, so keep it simple - look for at least 6-8 core processing

• Do you need a camera? We will leave this up to you to decide

Let’s take about the “Premium” package options

The best professional scan tools are (almost) a full diagnostic shop in one box, and can possibly include some or all of the below:

• Code-to-Fix Database: High-end tools often include or offer subscriptions to integrated repair databases (Identifix, Autodata, MOTOR) for a period of time right out of the box, so make sure you take this into consideration when looking at the overall price on any given unit.

• ADAS Calibration: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which include lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control, require precise sensor and camera calibration after many common repairs (windshield replacement, suspension work, body repair).

• Electric Vehicle (EV) Diagnostics: As EV volume increases, the scan tool must offer specialized functions, such as reading high-voltage battery cell balance data and related thermal management system faults.

We get it - this is a BIG EXPENSE and we are all trying to save money to put back into our pocket. A few things to consider here:

Initial Cost vs. Total Cost of Ownership

Professional scan tools are a significant investment, often costing anywhere from $1,000 to over $5,000 for high-end diagnostic tablets (e.g., Xtool Prodigy, TopDon Phoenix series and so on).
